ILM Presentation
Nov. 24th, 2008 12:57 am3 directors from ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) came to SJSU on Friday to give us some insight on their company. But even they say the portfolio is more important than the degree haha. Also individualism, originality, and your passion is what they look for. Having traditional foundation helps to communicate your message, but these days, artists are basically drawing the same things if its just the foundations (aren't concept arts starting to look the same?). It is more desirable for studios to have artists who can communicate or emphasize interesting story with their art.
Quick notes I've jotted down:
-Reference reference reference. Always use reference. Don't make things up in your mind without knowing what you draw. That been said so many times in the past.
-Creating functional art. The ability to move the character and turn them around from 360 etc. Making the art useful for others such as character sheet.
-Concept artist enforces the story
-Having imagination, originality and ideas
-What are you about? What is your passion?
-Portfolio matters! Duh.
-Get paid to draw!! Starting off at a small studio is a good start. Get your foot in the door!
-Illustration = Communication
