This summer, the city of SF and the surrounding regions are hosting the America-Japan 20th Grassroots Summit.
This all started in 1841, when a little boy, John Manjiro (age 14) and his fishing vessel was wrecked in a storm. He was rescued by a U.S. whaler, Captain Whitfield, and brought to America. He became the first Japanese to set foot on American soil.
Manjiro's decedents and the Whitfield family kept their relationships for 6 generations which developed into this Grassroots Summit.
The Manjiro/Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange with the support of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan and the Consul General of Japan organizes a week-long citizen exchange program each year. The summit aims to strengthen the peaceful relationship between Japan and America by fostering grassroots friendships.
Approximately 200 citizens (all ages) from Japan visit the U.S and in turn, the next year Americans visit Japan. Past United States host regions have included Kentucky, Texas, Colorado and Massachusetts. The San Francisco Bay Area was selected as the host region for 2010 in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the ship Kanrin Maru’s arrival in the San Francisco Bay. Kanrin Maru arrived with Katsu Kaishu, John Manjiro, Fukuzawa Yukichi, etc and marked Japan’s official opening of diplomatic relations with the United States.
Next year, 2011, the Summit will be held in Kochi, Japan, the region where Manjiro grew up.
The summit will be from August 24-30. A series of events will be planned during this time including activities open to the public.
The Summit organizers are also seeking families who can host home-stays from 8/26-28. If you or anyone you know are interested in this opportunity, please see the below and contact the Regional Leaders directly.
