I watched about 20 anime this summer, gonna split them in parts, so I don't end up writing all day!
Attack on Titan
Blood Lad
Brothers Conflict
Dangan Ronpa
Dogs and Scissors
Free!
Gatchaman Crowds
Genshiken Nidaime
Anime Mirai 2013 - Little Witch Academia
Anime Mirai 2013 - Death Billiard
Attack on Titan
Everyone, even non-anime fans, are watching this. The new FMA perhaps? Its just really compelling and I get upset when there's a cliffhanger at the end of each episode that I want to throw my chair haha. I tried to stay away from the fandom, especially on Tumblr, because its so spoilerish with the manga. I'm a bit spoiled from just looking up information and google image, but I'm trying to not to dwell into it. Its the type of show for me that I want to remain surprised and I prefer just watching the anime for now since I don't have time to read manga. Watching characters just get killed off so easily kinda makes me upset as well. Unlike a lot of anime where death have a significant moment, humanity here are just like ants, whose life is crushed in an instant. I don't think I've watched a dark fantasy that appealed to everyone before. Though AoT fandom is a bit crazy and silly though haha.
Blood Lad
It had a lot of potential, but didn't really go anywhere at the end. Plus the anime was cut short and ended on episode TEN. ONLY 10 EPISODES?!!! I really like the characters and design. Staz is kinda cool and nonchalant and nerdy. Hydra's crush on Staz was really adorable >w< There's only what felt like one major arc in the middle and the rest is mysteries and plot and character being built too late before anything actually happens. Might check out the manga...
Brothers Conflict
Rage worthy shoujo anime based on a novel that turned into a otoge. The heroine, Ema, did absolutely nothing but joins a family of a lot of brothers, who all fell in love with her on first sight. SHE DID NOTHING TO DEEPEN THEIR LOVE FOR HER and yet they all act as if they found the love of their life. They must really never met a girl before or something. Even gross is that a lot of them are older men who graduated college hitting on a high school girl. Ew ew. Ema is a sweet girl, but this girl does absolutely nothing to stop the boys from harassing her. She even kissed one of the twins back? Like, girl, have some sass point and push them away. It improves a bit at the end when she was able to tell everyone her feeling, but some brothers are being ass and not respecting her feelings anyways. The ONE brother I do like is Yusuke, who is trying his best to go to the same university as Ema even though he's not that smart. He doesn't flirt with her or shove his feelings on her and just want to be by her side. If there's season 2, I'll be still rooting for him!!
Dangan Ronpa
It feels like I'm watching a game. They even took the execution scenes directly from the game! But I kinda like that Phoenix Wright kinda feel, so it didn't bother me too much. A bunch of students die here as well as its a "whose done it" mystery, but the impact of their death felt a lot more meaningful in the later half. Heck I even cried at some moments. I love Kyoko Kirigiri a lot and her relationship with Naegi is cute >w< There's still much that's not revealed in the anime, but I'm hoping there's a second season... (I would play the game if I was the type to play game haha)
Dogs and Scissors
It's almost borderlining bestiality orz;;; This is weird show where a guy who love books was shot and died, reincarnates into a dog. He is adopted by a famous novelist Natsuno who is a bit of a sadist with her scissors. The majority of the characters are females...but they are twisted in their own ways. Also somehow they carry weapons like a chainsaw or a broomstick with a spear hidden and randomly fight Natsuno with her small pairs of scissors lol. Its not exactly a good show, but somehow its entertaining enough for me to keep watching it if not for the sick humor or twist of the females haha.
Free!
I will save this for a separate entry haha. My anime of the season~!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE~~ I love everything about it. This the most recent series where I draw ton of fanarts nonstop. This might be my new Phi Brain... my obsession carries on to buying crap ton of merchandise that I'm wasting money even to the point of buying the Bluray!! /save me
Gatchaman Crowds
Despite its visual looking flashier, its says a lot of about society. It's strangely deep on how social media/networking runs our life and what it means to be a hero. It kinda like Tiger and Bunny in a way, except it doesn't rely too much on battling evil every episode. In fact there only a handful of them. Hajime is a quirky female character who acts kinda like a perky hippie but is super straight to the point and smart. Despite it looking like a kids show, it has some scary themes where people do get injured especially with one episode had an incident that reminds me of Akihabara massacre. Rather than rebooting the Gatchaman franchise with something familiar, Crowds is doing something different and more like a commentary on society. The ending however, felt kinda rush, as half the characters didn't get enough closure.
Genshiken Nidaime
I really enjoyed the first anime and the manga, so I was glad it had a return in "Second Season." Visually its more bright and colorful than before. The series is more female heavy with a bunch of fujoshi joining the club, so I say it'll appeal to me even more. The early season, I had Oguie to relate to. Now there's just a bunch of them~ Fujoshi banzai! What's more interesting is we have Hato, who is a crossdresser and Fudanshi (male fujoshi), who's sexuality seems to be changing. even though he repeatedly said he's straight. I've sorta spoiled myself with the manga, but I hope there's a sequel to further explore the characters and Hato's self-identity as a male and fudanshi.
Side Anime
Anime Mirai 2013 - Little Witch Academia
This is an animation short that's animated really nicely by new Studio Trigger. The style looks a bit western, but with that anime sensibility. It spread quite a bit on Tumblr and animation fans. Super fun and shows off what a new studio can do, whose just released the new Kill La Kill. I've funded their sequel kickstarter just so I can get my hands on art books.
Anime Mirai 2013 - Death Billiards
On the other hand, I actually liked Death Billiards a lot more. Though its more under radar compared to LWA, its more profound and says a lot about the human nature. "An old and a young man find themselves in a mysterious bar where they have to play a game of billiard. The bet: their lives." In just that short 25 minutes, we get to know the characters very well from the day they were born to how they got to this point. I really enjoyed this short a lot. It leaves a lasting impression on how you live your life.
