Un-Go, anime: final thoughts
Woah, did bones created an ending that was not weird? I'm very impressed. Almost all the Bones anime i watched, I always thought the ending was just weird or leaving me perplexed. But this actually had a nice closure that ties up the theme of the show. I look forward to watching the movie now that its been licensed by Sentai Filmworks. I noticed a lot of people didn't get sucked into the story at first because the mystery was very simple. But as I rewatched it, Shinjurou stated something like, "The issue may be not who did it, but rather why..." Even if the culprit is obvious, the reasoning behind why they murder someone are interesting and gives a look at the mindset of these people that experienced a war. Plus all the corruption, propaganda, censorship, behind a war etc. If you like social revelation and world building, its definitely something to watch. The mystery gets interesting near the last few episodes with the Bettenou power where reality is manipulated, so you can't tell what's real or not. Yet there are subtle hints that you have to keep your eyes on in order to get it before everything is revealed. Un-Go really isn't really a typical mystery anime. So you have to approach it differently to really appreciate such a series.
Mawaru Penguindrum
This is going to be incoherent because its really hard to put into words what I got out of it. My mind isn't really good at taking in symbolism and references so I got a bit confused at some points. Its emotional impact was intense! Even if I don't really understand it, I could feel it. Every episodes leaves you wanting to know more because all of those flashbacks that slowly reveals the characters history. Everyone was sacrificing each other left and right. We get a lot of symbols going on. The symbolic apple. About most of the episode sets in this abstract reality. So what was really happening in reality wasn't clear. I really wished they didn't reset the world...its kinda cheating all that build up for nothing to really happen. I wish everyone could be together and happy ;o; I'm not disappointed, just wanted a happy ending I guess haha. But the overall series was an amazing ride!!! No doubt, one of my favorite this year.
Comparing these two series, I think I was more satisfied with Un-Go because it was more concrete and clear. Penguindrum's ending was bittersweet and too symbolic for me.

Though a lot of peeps on the forums agree that it does get better in the second half XD I wish peeps don't judge a series by the first few eps haha. There's potential to everything!
