I've been meaning to write a review for K, but seeing [livejournal.com profile] tee2's disappointment with it, I wanted to justify why I enjoyed it so much XD I know I'm not the only one who enjoyed it haha (looks at tumblr). My taste can't be that bad!! Its definitely not an anime for everyone, but if you can take it for what it is, its a fun series.

K
K is easily one of the most impressionable anime for me in 2012. First, let me talk about the eye candies. The very first thing is its beautiful animation, background and characters! There hasn't been many anime that tries to break beyond the standard so the visual of K was refreshing. The action sequence is one of the best I've seen in a while for tv anime where it actually moves the camera around for more than 2 minute. Plus it remains at a pretty consistent quality, unlike a lot of anime where its starts getting budgety in some episodes (Though there are some noticeable reusing animation...Seri!!). The character designs are just gorgeous~! You get a basic gist of each character from design alone. Shiro and Kuroh are adorable~~ Although I have complaints about Seri's boobs and mini skirt. Even if its for fanservice, it still doesn't fit her personality at all. Neko is more understandable since she's probably lived mostly as a cat. Mikoto just oozes coolness. (I can go on with the other characters but I won't). The soundtrack of K is also unique and flows with the relax pace of the series. Angela's KINGS really sets the mood of the series. KISS AND SEARCH AND DESTROY~~!!

It takes an unconventional way of storytelling that kept me entertained, episode by episode. I can understand from [livejournal.com profile] tee2's review that the pacing was off-putting and I totally can feel it while watching it but it didn't bother me as much. It runs in this relax pace. It doesn't rush or cram too much information at once. I think K is kinda similar to Baccano, in how the stories are fragmented and more of the mystery is revealed by each episode. Compared to a lot of anime's ending, K actually ties most of its plot holes together and actually make sense when you look back. K foreshadows about everything through visual and dialogues and it takes a lot of rewatch to catch them. Even the most smallest things can be overlooked, but becomes an important clue in story. I think that's what makes it so fun for me to watch. After each episode I would go check tumblr or forums and read about everyone's discussion and speculation. Its not standard storytelling, but requires the viewer to speculate about the information presented. I think the PV of K was kinda misleading it appears to be an action show....but its actually came more off as a mystery. K does not try to tell a grand epic tale, but gives a fairly simple premise. The killer, the Colorless King, is running loose. The Homra clans want their revenge for the death of their comrade. Their king is a ticking time bomb that can destroy the whole city. The Scepter 4 is trying to protect the peace of the city. Kuroh needs to determine if Shiro is the Colorless King and execute him. Is Shiro the killer? And the series resolves all that in the 13 episodes. While doing so, it reveals the characters history and the world of K.

While people say there's a lack of development, I don't think that's really important in a series like K as it just tries to resolve its key points. It's a huge cast anyways kinda like Baccano. We at least get their personality. We do get to see Shiro and Kuroh get more developed, which is why I like following their story. Shiro moments break my heart~~ T_T He's pretty sneaky and relaxed for a main character, which is what I like about him. I love how Kuroh progressively grows attached to Shiro after wanting to kill him earlier XD My favorite scene was Shiro and Kuroh at the stadium. I do admit there are some characters I felt could have better development or use. Mikoto and Munakata's relationship bothers me as they are revealed to have been close friend or something, but never showed it before. A flashback would have helped! How did they know each other?? It was hard to sympathize at the pivotal moment in the final episode (I still shed tears anyways since it moved me haha). Yata and Fushimi are clearly fujoshi baits haha. I think I read somewhere on one of the writer's tweets that they are supposed to contrast with Suoh's and Munakata's relationship or something. There's a lot of parallel relationship going on between men XD BONDING!!!

The world of K is really thought out. Just as the visuals foreshadow things, there's a lot of symbolism going on. The Sword of Damocles is literally a sword that hangs above a king's head, like in the Greek myth. I actually wouldn't know about that if I didn't catch someone mentioning it. This blogger made note of the visual meaning. Who knew that doll with a Kitsune mask, shape shifter, would actually become very important in the story! I didn't catch it until someone mentioned the zeppelin had this written "Our Father in Heaven" in German. Shiro's parasol even has meaning! I like when creators really think about the details in the series which is why I really hope they expand it to the second season. There's too much of the world of K that needs to be explored and hopefully through the anime's second season because I doubt I'll be able to read the novel.

And the ending basically resolves all the plot points given with an emotional farewell. As someone mentioned, it tied everything neatly. There might be a few loose ends, but the mystery and plot points are resolved! The final episode "King" was fitting as each King has their own interpretation of what it means to be king. I admit I cried at that final scene, esp. Neko and Kuroh's little moment. Its pretty funny how people on tumblr were also distraught by it. Second season gives me hope that we get our Shiro back and we learn more of the world of K!!!

Overall, K was a fun ride for me~! It's definitely has a different feel compared to other standard anime, which makes it unique. Its not perfect, but offers a lot of subtlety. It was fun speculating everything. I'm happy that it got a second season and hope it sorta fills in more character's backstory and show the aftermath of this story.

SHIRO IS MY KING!!!
