When I watched this episode, it was clear that Rolo never gotten over the whole killer instinct deal. However, it seems to him if you are able to make your own decisions and not be someone's dog, that makes you human. Also to have feelings and memories for someone makes you human as well. I felt that his death is how it should've been because it was his actions that made Lulu get back on track.
I can't forgive him for Shirley's death. I love the poor girl. But what Rolo did in that moment would be something she would be proud of. He did something that she wished to do, which was to protect Lulu. So, in a way, I believe he redeemed himself.
