Asian population in US

ONLY 4.4%?!!! (2006)
That tiny? D: Yikes....I guess being stuck in the Bay Area and only traveling to LA, NY, and Hawaii...I thought there were plenty of Asians all over America.

Now I see the whole "Asian minority" part...lol (even tho I took Asian American studies few years ago :P)

(This came up when my sister questioned why there were mostly Caucasians in the gymnastics representing America...)

Hahah XD;; I haven't gone to states where there are no Asians...I'm thinking...where is Georgia 8D..? I'm too California-centered. *goes look at the US map*

Yep, we are a tiny tiny minority that just likes to cluster together in Asian communities, lol.

XD Yeahhh~ I need my asian areas~ If you go a little inland, or to the center... it's like.. wow! Even though I have some asian friends in places like Colorado or Texas... it's like.. japanese market? What? chinese market? what? We only have like.. 1-2 generalized asian markets which just sell random asian stuff all mixed together... and you have to travel extra far to find them XD;

I mostly believe that the only reason why there are plenty of Caucasians representing America is because more of them invest their money in recreational sports than Asians here as well as having better access to the appropriate resources.

Some sports require a lot of money to stay involved, like equestrian sports. Other times, you can't find what you need. You won't find Olympic size pools in low-income communities where most of the minority is... Or let alone golf clubs. There's a lack of these resources surrounding communities where the minority is the majority. To access some of them, one has to travel some of the most wealthiest communities, which are in fact almost all white. Even then, they require that you are a resident of that city to use their facilities. =/

Let's not forget that the Asian-American community stereotypically focus more on academics than recreation. It's a cultural attitude that still continues today. Why spend money to play when it could go to higher education and possible a chance at a job with good money.

Wow, I find that super surprising! I thought it's be higher than that, even if just a little higher. I wonder if it's higher in Canada? *goes to check*

[identity profile] gem2niki.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea, I thought it would be at least 6% :P
I checked...its around 4% as well haha.

Haha....where did they went off to in August? XD Do they hibernate in the fall :P?

That's insane *O* I was more shocked at how many black people were in NY. I never saw that many before.

I heard a news report that says that relatively soonish the minorities are going to out number Caucasians.

There's a Japanese girl in this diving event.

in the grand scheme of things, 4.4 is not a small number. California and the DC Metro area, man, they are so not the minority. There's a city up here called Annandale that we fondly call Asiandale. The Thai, Vietnamese, chinese and korean population here are high enough that all asian establishments on the main drags don't bother have signs or menus in english.

I feel like i'm the only japanese in the whole city sometimes though.

The thing is Asians are concentrated in certain areas. Rather than widespread all over the US. In the bay area, I never saw Asians as minority because there a lot of Asians here. So I never got the minority part. But elsewhere, it differs esp in the midwest.

My supervisor was like the only Korean in Kentucky and had a huge culture shock when he moved to Cali XD

4.4?? Damn, that is low. Or, well, I guess Hawaii doesn't help xD People here are almost always at least some-part Asian.

I thought there were more, like a lot of Asians!!

But does this also counts to the ones who are from Middle East? x_x
