Anime Spring 2012 Final Thoughts Part 2 and DVDs

Time for some quick final thoughts on anime I have completed lately. First caught up with the anime from Spring and was watching anime DVDs on the side. Little banner included just to make post look prettier ahhaa.

Lupin III: The Woman called Mine Fujiko
Mouretsu Space Pirates
Hetalia
Le Chevalier D'eon
Seirei no Moribito

Lupin III: The Woman called Mine Fujiko
Since I never watched any previous Lupin series, I was worried if I would not get who these characters are. But the series starts from the beginning with Fujiko's adventure, meeting each familiar character a long the way. The series is very episodic. There's some really bizarre imagery with owls that actually becomes important toward the end of the series. Fujiko basically gets naked almost EVERY episode. Maybe one or two she actually keeps her clothes on. However, this type of nudity isn't like in ecchi anime where the girls are like "oops my towel came off" (innocent). I'm actually okay with this, because Fujiko is a grown woman who uses her sexuality as a weapon. More power to her haha. The visual is also interesting in this old school, sketchy look. Sometimes the art gets wonky when they don't have the budget...but overall it's pretty consistent. Considering how the series didn't seem to have an overall plot, the last few episodes made it seem like it did and was a big surprise for me. I think the series was overall enjoyable near the second half when I got back to watching it.

Mouretsu Space Pirates
I was actually pretty consistent with watching this every week, until episode 16ish and then I took a long ass break. I wondered every week why I was still watching this. The show doesn't have a deep plot, drama or anything. Its very much a slice of life of a girl becoming a pirate captain and juggling with her school club life. When I expect something exciting to happen, it doesn't haha. All the characters in this series are way confident with what they can do. Heck the school club members were able to take over the Bentenmaru ship! I didn't care much for the school stuff, but once they actually dwell deeper into the world of space pirates, things got more interesting. We get to meet a bunch pirate crews. But that was the final arc so I felt shorted out. Marika, the heroine, almost feel too confident with her decision...but I guess being a Captain she has to. But her type of character is pretty unique for a high school anime girl. If anyone watches this, don't expect too much action or drama. Its closer to slice of life in a futuristic setting.

DVDs

Hetalia
Finally watched this series! I bought the boxset DVDs and was watching it on the side from the currently aired anime. Although super late from when it was increasingly popular a couple of years, I finally understand all these Hetalia fanarts. I enjoyed it a lot. I think once I've grown used to the pacing and comedy of the series, I could appreciate the characters and joke. I tried watching it when it first came out, and I was really confused what was going on so I stopped. So after finally watching it, I looked back at the fanarts I've saved and can really enjoy how they're portrayed haha. Also watched the movie, which seems to be 50% plot along with scenes from the TV show. That movie was weird hahaa. The funimation dvds comes with lots of extras~! So I got a kick from watching those as well.

Le Chevalier D'eon
I ended up buying the DVD when I saw an animator's mashup clip that featured in an excellent fight scene. (I think it was the same animators that did the nice HxH animation). Strange enough I never heard of it before. This series is basically a tragic loosely based historic fantasy drama. The ending was a bit of a mess because they jumbled all these information, but the rest of it was quite amazing and suspenseful. I was watching 2 episodes a day...but ended up watching the rest of the 6 episodes one after another XD The story and mystery unfolding is really captivating. When shit started to go down, I was really sad, as I enjoyed watching the 4 musketeer go on their adventures around Europe. The ending is just too depressing. I think most of the characters are based on real historic figures and real events going on at that time. So I ended up going on Wiki while watching the series (learning history as I go). D'eon himself was an actual cross dresser! Sometimes the animation looks weird. Must not be easy for some to draw these realistic style. When they get their better key animators, the series looks fantastic! It's been a while since I've seen an anime that is for mature audience. Now an adult, I can fully appreciate it more. The DVD set I bought doesn't have a lot of extras :( Mostly historic notes. Apparently the other extra were in the individual dvds ones...

Seirei no Moribito
Ahhhh perfect anime!!! Just perfect. Finally watched it after I think a coworker recommended it to me years back. I almost felt like I was watching Princess Mononoke realized into a TV show. Well, not plot wise. The setting is kinda similar in this fantastical old Japan with unique spiritual creatures. The background painting is gorgeous!!! I'm planning to screencap them for reference haha. Balsa, the main female character, is so cool! I think she's the type of character I would like to see more in anime. While she is a strong warrior like a man, there's also a balance that she is also a woman. The fact that she's in her 30s, makes her experienced in the world, more mature, and rational. So she doesn't do stupid things like other characters in anime. Even the child, Chagum, who is secluded from the outside world in his palace is a very smart kid. I was worried about him ended up being a royal brat, but he's damn mature. Since I marathoned the series, I was watching 1 disc per day. But the series makes it so that I want to watch one after another right away. People mentioned the filler arc...but I see it as a time for us to learn about the characters more. Also I really enjoyed just watching Balsa and Chagum develop that mother child relationship T_T And also Tanda as the supporting father haha. The so called villains of the series are not really villains. They just see things differently from what our protagonists are seeing. Like in Princess Mononoke, there was no black and white. It was cool seeing the two groups working together in the end. :3 The ending killed me. Rather than cramming the ending to the same episode where they completed their goal, it was a separate episode that was well paced and built up to the most difficult scene to watch, the departure. I teared up so much. I hope that wasn't the last time they see each other! T_T I want to read fics where they see each other again.
This DVD set contains a lot of extras included interview with the Director and the original author~! There was also a promo clip that looked even better than the series haha. The series itself looks great anyways.

Will cover recently ended anime next time!
Currently watching Escaflowne for DVDs~!
